Evolution Goes Wild at SPIEL 2006

1 November 2006

For four days at SPIEL, the Super-Ape team of Tony, Sandra and Marta were put through their paces explaining Evolution and assisting the stream of visitors and players on our stand 10-48.

Being the only German speaker Marta's help was invaluable. Impossible to remember all the names but hard to forget the fun. Thanks all you guys and for showing us ways to play the game in ways even we had not seen before!

For laughter Anna came top of our list! For humour and great verbal spiel (at SPIEL) Ed and friends were hard to beat. Christaine (8) was one of the youngest players to win the game. She clearly relished beating her older brothers - that girl will do well in life!

Thanks too to Roberto, Fabio and Luca; true gamers, but ones who took time to play our family game and make useful comments all round. Lots of families and gamers swooped down on us and left with comments of "great", "chaotic" and "fun." We will settle for that!

BBC Radio Leicester tests Evolution on-air

19 July 2006

This morning Tim Forrest's BBC radio Leicester team fronted by cool and steady presenter Martin Ballard, invited a group of local Listeners to test EVOLUTION on-air.

Twins Connor and Otis (11), Charles (16) and his mum Susan kindly volunteered to put the board game through its paces without any previous knowledge of it, a potentially daunting experience for all concerned especially against the backdrop of live transmission! After a 5 minute briefing to explain the game, play then started in earnest outside the studio. Martin asked the players at the start of the game about how the game appeared initially, when they had little familiarity with it. Naturally, later reactions were really positive. Martin seamlessly carried out his interviews whilst he popped in and out of the studio to play his latest track or transmit messages to listeners. As Martin noted, the fun had by all was evident by the smiles on the player's faces as the game progressed.

During play, gentlemanly niceties were temporarily replaced by "beastliness" as the volcano piece and eruptions were used with gusto, mainly to slow leader Otis down. As it happens Otis seemed to have an incredible run of skill (or luck!) winning almost every premium card prediction contest. Having completed his path without a single risky card (something I'd never seen before) the other players raced to catch up. Charles, Connor and Susan combined forces to try to keep Otis's piece away from the last card and Otis from the winning line. Just as all players had caught up and completed their own paths a cruel twist of fate (METEOR thunderbolt was drawn) meant that all paths were reduced to four eras. But in the end Otis's luck held out and he won, thus becoming the top evolutionary specie on air!

Any way it was great to see smiles all round and be part of the fun. Wholehearted thanks are due to the players and BBC radio Leicester for organising the event.
